Journey to the West is a mythological novel based on many centuries of popular tradition. It was probably put into its present form in the 15708 by Wu Cheng’en (1500-82).
This lively fantasy relates the amazing adventures of the priest San-zang as he travels west in search of Buddhist sutras with his three disciples, the irreverent and capable on-
key, greedy Pig, and Friar Sand. The opening chapters recount the earlier exploits of Monkey, culminating in his rebellion against Heaven. We then learn how Sanzang became a monk and was sent on his pilgrimage by the Tang emperor who had escaped death with the help of an Underworld official.
The main story, the journey, takes the priest through all kinds of entertaining trials and tribulations, mainly at the
hands of monsters and spirits who want to eat him. Only the courage and powers of his disciples, especially Monkey, save him from death. Monkey is the hero of the fantasy, and the reader will soon learn why he has long been so loved in China. Will the pilgrims reach the Vulture Peak and obtain the Scriptures? The answer will only be found at the end of the lOO-chapter novel.
The story is as full of imagination as Monkey is of magic, and packed with incident and down-to-earth humour. The illustrations are from 19th-century Chinese edition. This is the first of the three volumes of the novel.

Also called "The story of the Stone (Shitouji 石头记)", this novel written by Cao Xueqin 曹雪芹 (d. 1763) is said to be the greatest masterpiece of Chinese fiction. A wide branched scholarship does not consent about the main theme of this novel, should it be a novel of sentiment, of Daoist-Buddhist enlightenment, of social observation, of the decay of an aristocratic familiy, or even a veiled attack on Manchu rule. The frame of the novel is the contest of a Buddhist and a Daoist priest who make be born a young noble boy called Jia Baoyu 贾宝玉 and his girl cousin Lin Daiyu 林黛玉. With a loving detail describing the life of the two cousins in a huge noble mansion, between gardens and palaces, the red thread is the triangular love between Baoyu, Daiyu and a second girl cousin called Xue Baochai 薛宝钗 that is of more plumper character than the ever sick Daiyu. Switching between their life, the divine world and dreams, Baoyu becomes deranged after the disappearance of a stone (the origin of the second title) he had in his mouth when he was born. Not knowing, his love Daiyu died, he is tricked to marrying Baochai. Becoming aware of being tricked, Baoyu leaves the world of the "red dust" and becomes a monk. With hundreds of persons and their stories, paralleling the life and feelings of servants to the life of the main persons, the story is very complex and full of symbolisms, but very interesting and convincing for its encyclopedic character, depicting the life of a noble familiy in the 18th century Qing China.

The boxes, crates and end tables are still stashed in his parents' home in South Buffalo, packed up and ready for relocation to Portland. Tim Kennedy gathered his belongings during training camp because he didn't know if he would stick with the Sabres and wanted to be prepared, just in case.
Kennedy left his possessions scattered while staying in a hotel to start the season. He rented a furnished apartment when the Sabres told him to find a place. He proved he belonged in the NHL during a solid rookie year. Now, while playing in the World Championships, he's ready for the next step in his career.
Kennedy, 24, is playing for the United States along with goalie David Leggio, the former St. Joe's and Clarkson University star from Williamsville. They have known each other through Buffalo hockey circles since they were teenagers and played on the same team once in the Empire State Games.
Team USA has had a miserable showing in Germany, losing the first two games in overtime before falling to Finland. The Yanks have to win three games in the relegation round to avoid demotion from international hockey's elite division.
It has been an interesting year for Kennedy, who opened the season trying to make a strong impression in Buffalo and ended up making a strong impression in Toronto. Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke thought enough of the rookie forward to select him for Team USA for the world tournament in Germany.
Kennedy played about 13 minutes a game while fighting through a sore shin, but he now has one skate in USA Hockey's door for the first time in his career. He never made it past the local select camps when he was a teenager, was overlooked for the World Junior Championships and was a surprise choice to play in the world championships.
It says something when you consider who led the selection process and how many other players were available before the Americans settled on Kennedy. Burke is one of the best talent evaluators in the business. Tim Connolly, Drew Stafford, Paul Gaustad and Jason Pominville were among the Buffalo players overlooked. Pominville's mother is from Wisconsin so he played for Team USA last year.
Burke has an affinity for players who are long on effort and competitive bite, which is what Kennedy had over the others. Kennedy didn't record a point in the opening round but gained invaluable experience.
Kennedy will take a few weeks off to allow his body to heal from a long season before getting back to work. He had 10 goals and 26 points this season, and is capable of doubling his production. He started out strong, fought through a slump and became one of the Sabres' best forwards down the stretch and in the playoffs.
It's about time he unpacks.
"This is my first time playing overseas," he said. "It has helped me see how far the game has come over here but also what I need to work on. I'm pretty excited to get back and start training for next year."

Sparano would not specify the body part Marshall had repaired and tried to downplay the issue when pressed, but it's still a pretty stunning blow for a team that burned two second-round draft picks and a $50 million contract on a single player.
According to a league source, the surgery was on the same hip Marshall had repaired nearly 14 months ago.
"It's going to take some time right now," Sparano said Wednesday after Day 2 of Organized Team Activities. "We'll see where it is. The process is getting better right now each day, so we'll see where it goes. I don't know whether or not he'll participate in any OTA's."
Asked if the team expected this when it signed Marshall on April 14, Sparano paused.
"I would say that … uh … well … no," he said. "Just came up. … It's just something that came up, we needed to get it cleaned up and we did."
Sparano went on to say he felt "no disappointment at all" with the news about Marshall, who rode a stationary bike for a while during Tuesday's practice but did nothing else more strenuous than standing in the offensive backfield taking "mental reps" during team drills.
"He's been here for [four] weeks now, throwing and catching and doing all the things necessary," Sparano said. "He was throwing and catching the day that the procedure was done, so [I'm] not even concerned about that."
It was a balky hamstring that caused Marshall to miss his final game with the Broncos (with a team suspension thrown in) last season.
"It's definitely frustrating, but you know, some things you can't control," Marshall told reporters before his surgery was disclosed. "In my past, I learned that, not to worry myself and hold my head down when I can't control it. I'm just going to do the best I can with the mental reps and prepare myself that way."
Other notable Marshall injuries in recent years included a hip problem that required surgery on March 31, 2009. He was back from that in time for Broncos training camp but his erratic practice performance led to a two-game team suspension last preseason.
On March 22, 2008, Marshall reportedly slipped on an empty McDonald's bag while wrestling with family members, which led to him falling through a TV set at his home in Orlando and cutting his right forearm. That mishap required surgery to repair damage to "one artery, one vein, one nerve, two tendons and three muscles," according to the Broncos trainer.
Marshall's arm was in a sling until late June, and he later admitted playing the entire 2008 season with numbness in his right hand.
There were also problems in the 2007 offseason. A groin strain caused him to miss Broncos minicamps in May and June, and a pulled quadriceps muscle suffered on July 10 caused him to miss nearly the entire training camp.
So, this makes four straight off-seasons that Marshall has had some sort of injury problem that has caused him to miss workouts. And that doesn't even count the slight tear in his knee he suffered as a rookie during the 2006 preseason.
